Chapter Thirty-Four

Sunday, March 29 - 0635 Central Daylight Time

Microwave Services Communications Lab

Darlington Avenue

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Zach had driven to the office early to try to make sense of the strange issues affecting the DOD microwave system in New Mexico. Fortunately for Zach, it was Sunday and there was no one at the office. When he arrived he was so upset he sat for a long time and just stared out the office window.

Zach felt miserable. He was exhausted and his head ached. The grief of losing his close friend, the strain of making funeral arrangements and attending to Rachael’s needs, the arguments with Angie, and the data problems with the microwave system in New Mexico; were pushing Zach toward the brink of collapse.

He turned away from the window and stared at Fred’s note. No matter how hard he tried, he simply could not make any sense out of them. He gave up and shifted his attention to the test data he had brought back from New Mexico. To be certain he did not lose Fred’s notes, he took a small piece of tape and stuck them to the front of the computer monitor.

For two hours Zach poured over that data as he tried to determine a cause for the unusual data he had recorded in New Mexico. He tried every conceivable method of combining, filtering, and sorting the data. No matter what method he tried, the result was always the same. There was not even a clue as to the source of the interference.

He rubbed his tired, burning eyes. He desperately wanted to just quit and go home, but it was crucial he identify the problems and devise a solution to correct them. If he didn’t, his company, Microwave Services Inc., was doomed.

“Why can’t I solve this stupid problem?” he shouted out loud. In a sudden burst of anger his hand lashed out at the empty soda bottles sitting on his desk. The plastic bottles went flying and bounced across the floor of his office.

Needing a break and another shot of caffeine, he got up and went to the refrigerator. He grabbed another Mountain Dew and returned to his desk. Draining half of the bottle’s contents, he set the bottle on his desk where the five empty bottles, now strewn across the floor, had been sitting. Many of Zach’s friends thought his consumption of Mountain Dew bordered on addiction. He knew he was drinking far too much soda, but he did not care. Caffeine was all that kept him going.

No matter how he manipulated the data, he could not find even a shred of evidence that would account for the mysterious interference. Fred’s note taped to the monitor nagged at his attention. He just could not keep his concentration focused on the data.

An automatic appointment alarm popped up on Zach’s monitor. Zach double-clicked the icon and opened his appointment calendar. The appointment dialog box read, “Get items ready for Nevada trip on Monday, March 30.”

Zach looked at the calendar on his desk and shook his head.
